Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a skin condition characterized by the appearance of white patches on the skin due to the destruction of melanocytes (the pigment-producing cells in the skin). While the exact cause of vitiligo is not fully understood, it is primarily considered an autoimmune disorder, where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own skin cells, resulting in loss of pigmentation.

At Gupta Skin Care Clinic, we offer comprehensive treatments for vitiligo, helping to restore skin tone and improve the appearance of affected areas. Our experienced dermatologists are committed to finding the most effective treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.

Common Myths About Vitiligo

  • Myth: Vitiligo is caused by eating non-vegetarian food, especially fish with milk.
    • Fact: There is no scientific evidence to support this claim. Vitiligo can affect anyone, regardless of their diet, and it is seen equally in both vegetarians and non-vegetarians.
  • Myth: There is no remedy for vitiligo.
    • Fact: Vitiligo is treatable. While there is no permanent cure, the condition can be managed with various therapies that help restore pigmentation and prevent further depigmentation.

Treatment Options for Vitiligo:

  • Topical Medications:

    • Corticosteroids: These anti-inflammatory medications can help reduce inflammation and promote repigmentation of the skin. They are often prescribed for mild cases of vitiligo.
    • Calcineurin Inhibitors: These topical treatments are used as an alternative to steroids and help to modulate the immune response.
    • Topical Phototherapy: In some cases, doctors may prescribe a combination of topical medications along with phototherapy.

  • Systemic Medications:

    • Oral Medications: For more widespread or resistant cases of vitiligo, oral medications like oral corticosteroids or immunosuppressive drugs may be recommended to slow the progression and help with repigmentation.

  • Phototherapy (Narrowband UVB):

    • Phototherapy uses ultraviolet (UV) light to stimulate melanin production in the skin. This treatment is often effective for individuals with larger areas of depigmented skin, helping to stimulate melanocytes in the affected areas and restore skin pigmentation.
    • Excimer Laser: A more targeted approach using UV light to treat smaller areas of depigmentation.

  • Skin Grafting and Surgical Treatments:

    • In cases where other treatments are ineffective, skin grafting or surgical repigmentation may be considered. This involves transplanting healthy, pigmented skin to areas affected by vitiligo.
